Georgia Nears Completion of Samtredia–Grigoleti Highway Section After Delays

სამტრედია-გრიგოლეთი

The remaining 6-kilometer stretch of the third section of the Samtredia–Grigoleti highway is in the final stage of construction and will open to traffic in the near future, according to Georgia’s Roads Department.

Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze and Roads Department Deputy Chairman Jemal Zabakidze inspected the project site on Thursday. The third section of the highway includes a 12-kilometer four-lane asphalt road, six bridges, two interchanges, and livestock and local access crossings.

The route passes through the Guria region, connecting the town of Lanchkhuti and the villages of Gvimbalauri, Kvemo Chibati and NigoeTi. The project forms part of the broader East-West Highway corridor, one of Georgia’s key transport infrastructure initiatives.

The section was originally scheduled to open in April 2026, but delays occurred after authorities identified construction defects and ordered the contractor to demolish and rebuild one of the bridges. China’s Hunan Road & Bridge Construction Group, which has been working on the project since September 2022, is receiving GEL 324.6 million for the contract. While an initial 8-kilometer segment opened in December 2025, the launch of the remaining section was postponed until summer 2026.
