Levan Zhorzholiani, Head of the Georgian Government Administration, has opened an international conference entitled “From Research to Results: The Role of Patents in Technology Transfer.”

In his address, Zhorzholiani highlighted the fruitful cooperation between the Georgian Government and the European Patent Organisation, noting that the partnership with the European Patent Office serves as an important foundation for the further development of Georgia’s patent system and its ever-closer alignment with European standards.

“A European patent validation agreement has been concluded between the Georgian Government and the European Patent Organisation, an instrument that represents not merely a legal mechanism for the validation of European patents in Georgia, but an important platform for cooperation between Georgia and the European Patent Office. In 2025, Georgia expressed its interest in acceding to the European Patent Convention. Accession to the Convention also entails membership of the European Patent Organisation, which in turn implies Georgia’s full integration into the European patent space,” Zhorzholiani stated.

He further noted that a patent represents not only a legal mechanism, but a significant instrument of economic policy that creates a predictable and reliable environment for innovators, businesses, and investors alike.

“It is a priority for Georgia to establish a strong and competitive innovation ecosystem, which requires both the refinement of the legal framework and the strengthening of institutional capacity. In this context, what matters is not only the existence of a robust legal framework towards which a great many steps have been taken in recent years, but also the integration of the patent system into the broader processes of supporting innovation, business development, and investment,” said the Head of the Government Administration.

Georgia’s Minister of Education and Science, Givi Mikanadze, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Nino Tsilosani, Chairman of Sakpatenti Soso Giorgadze, EPO President António Campinos, and Director General of the EPO Academy Xavier Seuba also addressed the conference. The representatives of government agencies, international organisations, academic circles, and the innovation and technology sector attended the international conference.
