Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced plans to purchase 10 new passenger trains, 50 locomotives, and 1,500 wagons as part of Georgia Railway’s 2026–2028 development plan. The upgrades will introduce modern railway systems, improve operations, and double the network’s capacity, increasing annual passenger transport from 2 million to 5 million.
Kobakhidze highlighted key infrastructure projects, including the addition of the Tbilisi–Kutaisi route and the rehabilitation of the Tbilisi–Batumi and Tbilisi–Akhaltsikhe lines. After completion in August, travel times will be reduced from 5.5 hours to 4 hours on the Tbilisi-Batumi route, and from 6 hours to 3 hours on the Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe route, which was inactive since 2009.
The government will also fully renovate the historic Borjomi–Bakuriani “Kukushka” train and five stations along the line, resuming service in January 2027 to enhance both local transit and tourism.
