ირაკლი კობახიძე

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze says that Georgian Railway has reduced its staff by 1,000 positions within a year, resulting in annual savings of GEL 24 million. He made the statement during a presentation on the company’s “historic renewal,” noting that the restructuring has improved management efficiency.

According to Kobakhidze, additional savings were achieved through procurement optimization and renegotiated contracts. He said that GEL 190.4 million was saved on a one-off basis, while eliminating intermediary companies and bringing business processes back in-house generated another GEL 18.5 million in savings and additional revenue.

Overall, the combined effect of staffing cuts and operational changes has exceeded GEL 40 million in structural savings annually. Kobakhidze emphasized that these funds will be reinvested into further development of the railway and will support broader economic growth.

He added that the railway plays a key role in Georgia’s connectivity and transit function, alongside major infrastructure projects such as highways, airport expansion, and the planned Anaklia port, all aimed at strengthening the country’s logistics and tourism potential.
