Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze says Georgia will tighten policies to prevent the misuse of study residence permits. Speaking in Parliament during an interpellation on migration issues, he noted that many individuals have obtained study permits despite not actually being in the country for educational purposes.
Kobakhidze announced that the government is preparing a package of legislative amendments aimed at addressing these gaps. While he did not disclose specific details, he said the full set of proposals will be presented once finalized.
According to the prime minister, stricter controls will ensure that study permits are granted only to genuine students. He emphasized that problematic practices have already been identified, including cases where residence permits were issued even when a person was not engaged in studies.
Kobakhidze also said the government will upgrade the database of foreign nationals in Georgia to create a comprehensive system reflecting all foreigners residing in the country. This, he argued, will significantly strengthen the country’s ability to combat illegal migration.
