Georgian Bread Goes to Export – Over 100,000 Units Sent to Israel

Georgia has begun exporting bread and bakery products. According to the Chairman of the “Bakers’ Association,” Malkhaz Dolidze, this is a major achievement for the industry.

He says that Georgian products are becoming increasingly in demand on international markets, which helps producers grow and increase profits.

According to Malkhaz Dolidze, last year one Georgian company shipped several large batches of bread to Israel. The exported products included five different varieties.

“Last year, products were sent to Israel three times from one of the production facilities. The first shipment consisted of 35,000 units, the second - 37,000, and the third - 37,000 units. This is a major achievement and a great success for bread production,” said the Association Chairman.

He added that in addition to bread, there is demand for other bakery items abroad: “Besides bread, there are additional flour-based products that this company produces. They are currently discussing packaging materials, and they will likely export those as well, which is very positive.”

According to Dolidze, there is significant interest in Georgian bread from other countries as well, and negotiations are underway in several directions.

“We should expect export growth, because negotiations are ongoing and multiple countries have expressed interest. I cannot name specific countries yet, because the producer asked that the information not be disclosed for now. However, there is strong interest in expanding production and exporting more products abroad,” Dolidze noted.

The Association Chairman explained that the bread intended for export is mostly produced using shock-freezing technology, which preserves product quality. He also said that international recognition was boosted by UNESCO’s decision.

“You know how UNESCO recognized Georgian breadmaking traditions - Georgian wheat and the history of Georgian bread. We are working actively in this direction. Export brings profit to producers, and entrepreneurs are very eager to make full use of this potential,” Dolidze said.

As a reminder, Georgian bread and wheat culture have been included in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which increases trust and prestige for Georgian products on international markets.
