Georgian microfinance organizations (MFOs) hold GEL 1 billion worth of gold, according to the consolidated financial report of the microfinance organizations, which reflects their financial indicators as of the first quarter of 2025.
The size of the microfinance organizations' credit portfolio is 1.55 billion GEL, of which the largest share falls on pawn loans in the amount of 1.17 billion GEL (75% of the total portfolio), and the population has invested 1.05 billion GEL in gold and other valuables as collateral for these loans.
According to the financial indicators of the microfinance organizations, the pawn loan portfolio has increased by 315 million GEL, or 37%, compared to the same period of the previous year. As for the value of pawned gold, it has increased by 306 million GEL, or 41%, compared to the previous year.
The increase in the value of gold in pawnshops is in turn related to the rise in the price of gold, which is currently worth USD 3,250 per ounce.
