Georgian Railway has announced a GEL 2,650,000 tender for the full rehabilitation of the historic Borjomi–Bakuriani narrow-gauge train locomotive, known as “Kukushka.” The tender covers the purchase of all necessary components for the Škoda 11-04 electric locomotive, including a new control panel, transformers, cables, electronic modules, and other technical equipment required for a complete overhaul.
The 37-kilometer narrow-gauge line (90 cm), which passes through six settlements - Daba, Tsaghveri, Tsemi, Tba, Libani, and Sakotsavi - has not operated since early 2020, when service was suspended due to the pandemic. Built in 1902 and electrified in 1967, the line has long been served by the same Škoda 11-04 locomotive model now slated for rehabilitation.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze recently announced that, in addition to the locomotive, the entire railway line will also undergo rehabilitation, though the tender for track work has not yet been published.
Companies interested in participating in the locomotive rehabilitation tender may submit proposals until May 29.
