Georgian Railway has signed a $7.3 million contract with Chinese manufacturer CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co. Ltd. for the overhaul and partial modernization of three GRT-series electric passenger trains. The trains, originally built by the same company and delivered in 2009, will undergo refurbishment under a direct procurement agreement.
The project includes major upgrades across all 12 railcars, including the installation of modern restroom systems with waste storage tanks, new LED lighting, smoke detectors, and 30 surveillance cameras capable of storing at least 15 days of footage. First- and second-class cars will also receive new seating, while flooring throughout the trains will be fully replaced.
Under the contract, the work must be completed within 12 months, including testing and trial runs. Each train will be required to successfully complete a minimum 686-km test journey before final acceptance.
The agreement includes a 12-month warranty period, during which CRRC will be responsible for fixing any defects at its own expense. The upgraded trains are expected to improve passenger comfort and extend the operational life of the fleet.
