Georgia's vineyard area reached 59,900 hectares (599 square kilometers) in 2024, according to the latest Agricultural Census, marking an 81% increase compared to 2014. Over the past decade, vineyard land expanded by 269 square kilometers, bringing the total area close to the size of Tbilisi, which covers 726 square kilometers.

Geostat reports that Georgia has 164.7 million grapevines, of which 158.9 million (96.4%) are of fruit-bearing age. The country's two dominant grape varieties are Rkatsiteli and Saperavi, which together account for more than 80% of all vines.

Rkatsiteli remains the most widely planted variety, with 76.6 million vines representing 46.5% of the total, followed by Saperavi with 55.9 million vines and a 34% share. These two varieties form the backbone of Georgia’s wine industry and vineyard production.

The rapid expansion of vineyards has contributed to recurring grape oversupply during the harvest season. In 2025, wineries processed 340,000 tonnes of grapes, including 170,000 tonnes of Rkatsiteli and 134,100 tonnes of Saperavi. To absorb excess supply, the government spent GEL 247 million on purchasing surplus grapes.
