According to the 2026 guide of the European Union’s Erasmus+ program, the Government of Georgia will not be able to benefit from the program. The document states that the reason is the political developments that have taken place in the country in recent months.
“In line with the Council Conclusions of 19 December 2024 and in response to political developments in Georgia, the European Union has reviewed the financial assistance that directly benefits the Georgian authorities. According to Article 20 of Regulation (EU) 2021/817 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 May 2021, which establishes Erasmus+: the EU Programme for Education and Training, Youth and Sport, direct financial assistance to the Georgian authorities — which may include the central government, local authorities, agencies, and state-owned enterprises — is not considered to be in the interest of the Union. Therefore, the Georgian authorities are not eligible to benefit from any of the actions provided under this guide”, the 2026 Erasmus+ guide states.
BM.GE will attempt to contact the Ministry of Education and the Georgian office of the Erasmus+ program to clarify this statement. For reference, over the past decades, more than 13,000 students and academic staff members from Georgia have studied or received training in Europe through Erasmus+ programs. School students and teachers also benefit from Erasmus+ programs.
