Gov't Pays The Legal Firm White & Case GEL 70 MLN For The Anaklia Arbitration Dispute

Government of Georgia hired international legal company White & Case for GEL 70 million to settle the dispute with Anaklia, - according to the contract signed by the Ministry of Justice with the legal firm White & Case.

As of the web-page of State Procurement Agency, out of the said amount, the government actually paid up to now GEL 52 million, which was 75% of the total value of the entire contract.

The International Arbitration Tribunal is considering the arbitration dispute of the Anaklia Development Consortium from 2020, which will concern the termination of the contract with the port investor as a result of deliberate actions by the government.

Foreign lawyers provide the following assistance to Government-established LEPL "Anaklia Development Agency":

“Legal assistance with respect to the matters arising in connection with the Investment Agreement signed between the Government of Georgia and the Anaklia Development Consortium on October 3, 2016, including termination of the Agreements," the agreement reads.

To remind, Government of Georgia has officially terminated contract with Anaklia Development Consortium on January 9, 2019. The Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure is demanding the Consortium to pay the penalty.

However, Anaklia Development Consortium has already spent 74 million USD on the project.

In total, the state has signed GEL 143 million contracts with the legal form White & Case since 2020.

White & Case is a global law firm with a team of 2,600 lawyers. The annual revenue of the company exceeds USD 2.8 billion.
