The Georgian government has removed from its official website a decree that disclosed the price the country pays Gazprom for natural gas. The State Security Service (SSSG) contacted BM.GE and requested a correction, after which the newsroom decided to take down the document citing “state interests.”
However, BM.GE notes that publicly available data, including GNERC reports and Gazprom’s financial statements, had already allowed the outlet to calculate that Georgia was paying $185 per 1,000 cubic meters of Russian natural gas, a figure it reported in 2024 as well.
Information about the decree first surfaced after TV channel “Formula” promoted it in a teaser for the program "Real Story with Eliso Jariashvili". The decree - Prime Minister’s Order N2212 dated 25 December 2025 - had been published on the government website before experts and journalists noticed that its attachment, which was marked as a commercial secret, had also been made public.
The document specified the price of natural gas purchased from Gazprom Export by the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC). GOGC, in turn, sells this gas to SOCAR Georgia Gas, the country’s largest gas distribution company.
Although the government has never publicly disclosed the price, BM.GE previously calculated it based on import volume and total payments. In 2023, Georgia imported 596 million cubic meters of Russian gas worth $110 million — equivalent to $185 per 1,000 cubic meters. In 2024, imports rose to 788 million cubic meters, totaling $145.7 million, again reflecting the same price level.
The full-year 2025 data is not yet available, but for the first 11 months Georgia purchased $123 million worth of natural gas from Russia.
