Georgia’s government is actively working to acquire a second medicine for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said before a government meeting.
According to Kobakhidze, the government has already signed an agreement with pharmaceutical company Italpharmaco to purchase the medicine “Givinostat”. He said Georgia will be among the first countries in the world to introduce the drug within the state disease management programme.
The Prime Minister noted that many countries with economies several times larger than Georgia’s per capita have not purchased the medicine due to its high cost. He described the decision as an example of the government’s commitment to healthcare and patient support.
Kobakhidze added that work is continuing to secure a second medication for Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients and expressed hope that the process will be completed soon. He also thanked Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze for leading the initiative.
