The government of Georgia announces that Tbilisi will have a new international airport. According to the plan, the new international airport will be built on the base of Vaziani Airfield near Tbilisi. Currently, Vaziani Airport is owned by the Ministry of Defense and has a military purpose. MP Teona Akubardia asked the Ministry of Defense how much did the government spend on the rehabilitation of the Vaziani military base over the years. According to the Ministry, a total of GEL 20 million has been spent on the renovation of the base.
The Deputy Minister of Economy, Mariam Kvrivishvili, announced in June that the Austrian company Airport Competence GmbH will conduct the feasibility studies for the construction of the new airport.
MP Teona Akubardia also addressed the question about Vaziani Airport to the Ministry of Economy. From the response of the Ministry of Economy, it is clear that an interagency commission was created to work on airport issues on June 5.
"In order to study the issue, a permanent interagency commission was created by the decree of the Government of Georgia dated June 5, 2023 N1054, which includes representatives of all relevant agencies, including the ministries of defense and internal affairs of Georgia. All necessary consultations will be held in the format of the said commission. In addition, we would like to inform you that the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia has not been able to find official supporting documents regarding the discussion of the mentioned initiative in the past," the Ministry of Economy said.
