Import Taxes on Rebar Harm the Market - Paata Trapaidze

არმატურა

Additional import taxes on rebar are negatively affecting Georgia’s market, according to Paata Trapaidze, CEO of Caucasus Road Project. He emphasized that the pricing process for rebar should be subject to journalistic investigation.

“Investigate why rebar pricing is in this state. Some local producers lobbied to impose extra import duties, which hinder the proper functioning of a market economy,” Trapaidze told BMG. He confirmed that prices have risen sharply since the taxes were introduced.

Trapaidze noted that Georgia relies on a few main rebar suppliers, including Iran, Turkey, and Russia. While geopolitical fluctuations influence prices, businesses adapt quickly to changing supply conditions.

The government has extended the rebar import tax for another six months, keeping it in effect until September 1, 2026. The tax was first introduced on January 25, 2025, and has been extended twice since then.
