In the first 11 months of this year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) expelled 1,131 illegal migrants from Georgia. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the figure before the start of the government meeting, emphasizing that this number equals the combined total of the last seven years.
According to Kobakhidze, the ministry’s effectiveness has increased significantly, though further strengthening of the MIA's Migration Department remains necessary.
“Over the past months, the effectiveness of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has increased substantially, especially in areas such as combating organized crime, corruption-related offenses, and drug-related crime. The same applies to the fight against illegal migration, where we are seeing impressive results.
This year, according to 11-month data, the Ministry of Internal Affairs expelled 1,131 illegal migrants from Georgia, a number equivalent to the total figure for the past seven years. Efficiency has increased dramatically, but the Migration Department still needs to be strengthened further. The minister and the ministry are actively working on this. Naturally, this will have a positive impact on future efforts against illegal migration.
According to the plan presented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, at least 3,500 illegal migrants will be expelled from the country next year; this is the minimum target. Overall, based on this plan, the issue of illegal migration will be fully resolved within 3–4 years, qualitatively eliminated, which is critically important from various perspectives, including national security.
I thank the Minister of Internal Affairs and the ministry for the work already done and their future plans,” the Prime Minister said.
