The Ministry of High-Tech Industry of Armenia has announced plans to roll out a 5G broadband network across the country. In an interview with Public Television, Minister Mkhitar Hayrapetyan revealed that the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) will allocate the 3600-3800 MHz frequency band for this purpose.

According to the minister, the deployment of 5G technology is future-oriented and aims to facilitate the creation of smart cities and the development of industrial zones. A draft law has been prepared to support these plans, which will be presented to Parliament this fall.

Once the necessary legislative amendments are made, a tender will be announced for telecommunications operators. The Ministry, in collaboration with the PSRC, is working on creating attractive conditions for potential investors, considering the high cost of the technology and the need to build the corresponding infrastructure nationwide.

It's worth noting that in March 2023, Team Telecom Armenia was the first telecommunications company to apply to the PSRC for the 700 MHz band to deploy a 5G network. According to the company's forecasts, the fifth-generation network could become available in Yerevan and several regional centers within two years.

However, experts point out that the current demand for 5G technology among the population is low, as it does not significantly differ from existing networks in terms of performance. Some believe that the promotion of 5G at this time is more of a marketing move.
