Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has commented on the end of German Ambassador Peter Fischer’s diplomatic mission in Georgia, again accusing him of damaging bilateral relations.
Speaking from Kazakhstan, Kobakhidze said Fischer was the only ambassador who, in his view, failed to contribute to the development of Georgian-German relations and instead caused harm.
He stressed that Germany has historically played a key role in supporting Georgia, particularly in the 1990s, and expressed hope that relations between the two countries would improve in the future.
“We are grateful to Germany for its long-standing support and want to restore the friendly relations we were used to. Unfortunately, Mr. Fischer caused significant damage to these relations, and we hope this will change,” Kobakhidze said.
The remarks follow Fischer’s announcement that his diplomatic mission in Georgia has ended. In a social media post, he wrote: “Our term in Georgia has ended. Thank you, farewell, and Auf Wiedersehen.”
Peter Fischer has served as Germany’s ambassador to Georgia since August 2022.
