Georgia plans to expand the capacity of all three of its international airports—Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi—as part of its infrastructure development strategy, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said during an interview with Imedi LIVE.
Kobakhidze said work is already underway to expand Tbilisi International Airport, increasing its annual passenger capacity to 10 million. He added that active work is also planned for Kutaisi International Airport, where passenger traffic is expected to reach around 5 million annually, while negotiations continue regarding the expansion of Batumi International Airport.
The prime minister also announced that construction of a new airport in Vaziani is expected to begin by the end of next year. Once completed, the new airport will have the capacity to serve up to 20 million passengers annually, which Kobakhidze said is necessary to accommodate Georgia's growing tourism sector.
In addition to aviation projects, Kobakhidze highlighted progress in railway infrastructure, noting the modernization of Georgia's railway network and the reopening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway for both passenger and freight transport. He said the upgrades will reduce travel times and strengthen the country's economic potential.
