Kobakhidze Says EU Is “Experiencing Degradation”

ირაკლი კობახიძე

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has said that the European Union is undergoing “degradation,” arguing that the ruling party “Georgian Dream” wants to show the public what is really happening in Europe. He made the remarks during an appearance on Imedi LIVE, responding to questions about his recent open letter to EU leaders.

Kobakhidze addressed interpretations suggesting that the ruling party had previously attempted to “reset” relations with Brussels but failed, leading to the publication of the letter. He rejected this framing, saying there was no hidden agenda behind the communication and that it simply reflects concerns about Europe’s current direction and its attitude toward the Georgian people.

He argued that criticism directed at Georgia from European officials is a “logical continuation” of what he described as the EU’s institutional decline driven by European bureaucracy. According to him, the open letter contains no hidden messages beyond this assessment, and he claimed that no one has properly responded to the questions raised in it.

The Prime Minister also criticized opposition figures and European officials, including EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczyński and German diplomat Peter Fischer, saying they represent what he called a “marginalized collective” alongside domestic political opponents. He added that the situation reflects a broader deterioration within European political structures.
