The environmental supervision authority has completed public consultations and issued a positive environmental decision for the upgrade of the Kobuleti bypass road into a four-lane highway. This approval allows the Roads Department to launch an international tender and begin construction works on the selected design.
The 31.3-kilometer bypass road, originally commissioned in 2018, will be expanded due to increasing traffic volumes. The project includes raising speed limits to 110–120 km/h per lane and improving overall road safety. It also foresees the construction of two new tunnels measuring 305 and 174 meters, along with additional bridges and interchanges.
Three alternative routes were evaluated, with the second option selected as the preferred design based on technical, economic, and environmental factors. This alternative involves constructing an additional dual carriageway parallel to the existing road, with adjustments in certain sections to improve curves and alignment.
The approved alignment runs alongside the current road for most of its length and includes significant reconstruction works along a 30.7-kilometer corridor divided into two sections. The project also involves demolishing three existing bridges and building new ones, with parts of the route shifting between the left and right sides of the current highway to optimize the final design.
