Major Change for Georgian Travelers: U.S. Adds Georgia to Visa Bond Program, Shortens Entry Periods

The U.S. Department of State has expanded its Visa Bond Pilot Program, and Georgia has been added to the list starting April 2, 2026.

Under this program, some applicants for B-1/B-2 visitor visas may be required to post a refundable bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 before the visa is issued. The amount is determined by the consular officer during the visa interview.

The purpose of the bond is to ensure compliance with visa rules and timely departure from the United States.

If the traveler follows the visa conditions and leaves the U.S. on time, the money is returned. However, beyond this formal rule, immigration practitioners have recently been observing another important trend. In practice, Georgian B-1/B-2 visitors are increasingly being admitted to the United States for only one month, instead of the traditional six-month period.

Shorter admissions appear aimed at preventing situations where visitors attempt to file immigrant petitions or adjustment of status applications while inside the U.S. Combined with the visa bond requirement and recent delays or pauses affecting immigrant visa processing, this represents a significant tightening of travel and immigration conditions for Georgian nationals.

For a country that has long been closely aligned with the United States and Western institutions, these developments are concerning and may signal increasing scrutiny toward Georgian travelers and a growing distance from Western mobility frameworks.

Anyone planning travel or long-term immigration strategies involving the United States should be aware of these developments and plan carefully.
