Georgia’s Ministry of Health has signed a contract with international consulting and engineering company ICME Healthcare to prepare architectural and engineering designs for a new, high-tech building at Tbilisi’s Republican Hospital as part of its rehabilitation.

The new building will house modern medical facilities, including operating rooms, intensive care and resuscitation departments, emergency services, and radiology units. These services will be relocated from the existing building to a facility designed to meet modern safety standards and international medical practices. The rehabilitation plan also provides upgrading the hospital’s existing buildings.

The ministry launched a simplified procurement procedure for the design and cost-estimation documentation on August 23, 2026. The decision was justified by technical limitations in adapting the existing building to modern safety standards, with officials warning that delays could increase costs and prolong the project.

The hospital’s future has been the subject of debate since January 2024, when then-Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced plans to demolish the existing building and construct a new hospital. Following protests from medical staff, the decision was reversed by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in February 2024. In January 2026, the government authorized the Health Ministry to procure rehabilitation design services through a simplified procedure for GEL 1.35 million.
