Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia explored the rehabilitation works at Baghdati-Abastumani access road today. Prime Minister of Georgia was briefed about the progress by Irakli Karseladze, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.

Rehabilitation and reconstruction works are actively progressing on the road. As the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia noted, this initiative will result in a significantly increased road safety and service standard. Time of commuting will reduce from the central part of West Georgia to the border with Turkey. Project completion will reduce the time of transportation from Kutaisi Airport to Abastumani by 1.5 hours and it will take 2.5 instead of 4 hours to reach the destination.

A 4 kilometer-long fragment of the motorway currently trespasses a valley in Abastumani village, which has residential and household buildings predominantly along the way. Thus, construction of a 16 kilometer-long Abastumani Bypass Road started with an aim of maintaining and improving the environmental condition within the resort. This initiative is part of a Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Project for a Road Fragment Connecting Baghdati with Abastumani. Construction works are scheduled to be completed in 2022.

Current alternative to an access road of Baghdati-Abastumani is a route trespassing Baghdati-Khashuri-Abastumani, which significantly increases the time of transportation from Kutaisi Airport. Construction of a new road will help to maintain the North-South connection so that vehicles do not cross the resort. Renewed route of Baghdati-Abastumani will connect Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Adjara regions in the most efficient manner.

Construction of the Abastumani Bypass Road will make it possible to avoid transit traffic through the resort, thus maintaining its unique ecology to its maximum.

Reconstruction and rehabilitation works are carried out at Baghdati-Abastumani access road by the Roads Department subordinated to the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia. Total cost of the project is 210 MLN GEL.

The Roads Department will be launching the rehabilitation of an 8 kilometer-long road connecting Abastumani to Benara next year. Cost of the initiative is about 10 MLN GEL.
