Delivery of new metro carriages for Tbilisi will begin in 2027, Deputy Finance Minister Giorgi Kakauridze announced during a parliamentary hearing on the 2026 state budget. He said the government expects to make the first advance payment under the contract later this month.
Kakauridze explained that renewing the city’s transport fleet is a gradual process aimed at avoiding large-scale replacements in the future.
“The renewal of Tbilisi’s bus fleet is an ongoing, systematic process. The same applies to the metro; there is a need to replace around 212 carriages. The first advance payment will be made this month, and while delivery may not be possible in 2026, new metro carriages will start arriving from 2027,” he said.
In July 2025, the international tender to supply new metro wagons was won by GT Group, which will deliver 111 modern carriages manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC. The total value of the contract is €150 million.
The project is financed by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and forms part of Tbilisi City Hall’s broader plan to modernize the capital’s public transport system.
