Pensions for people under the age of 70 will increase by GEL 45 to GEL 415 starting January 1, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced at a briefing at the Government Administration.
He said the government would make every effort to raise pensions beyond the increase required under the indexation mechanism. Under the decision, pensions for recipients under 70, excluding those living in high-mountain settlements, will rise by GEL 45 instead of the previously planned GEL 20.
The announcement came as discussions on the initial draft of Georgia’s 2027 state budget concluded. During a meeting of Parliament’s Budget and Finance Committee, lawmakers raised the possibility of increasing pensions to GEL 400. Around 40 minutes before Kobakhidze’s announcement, Deputy Finance Minister Giorgi Kakauridze said resources were available for an increase, but the exact figures would be confirmed after the Finance Ministry completed its analysis of available funds and projected revenues.
Under the initial 2027 budget draft, total pension spending was set to increase by GEL 555 million to GEL 5.57 billion. The proposal sets a 5.41% pension increase, above the legally stipulated minimum inflation rate of 5.1%. Pensions for recipients under 70 were initially due to rise by GEL 20, reaching GEL 390 in lowland areas and GEL 468 in high-mountain settlements. For pensioners aged 70 and over, the planned increase was 12.12%, or GEL 60, bringing monthly payments to GEL 555 in lowland areas and GEL 665 in high-mountain settlements.
