Pioneer of Georgian tourism Saba Kiknadze passed away

Saba Kiknadze, an iconic figure in Georgian tourism and a pioneer in transforming the nation into a celebrated travel destination, passed away today after a prolonged battle with a rare form of cancer. As a national hero in tourism, Kiknadze’s contributions to Georgia’s tourism industry have left an indelible mark, establishing a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

Educated as an architect, Kiknadze ventured into entrepreneurship in 1986, marking the beginning of a transformative journey not only for himself but for Georgian tourism and business. He was at the forefront of introducing Georgia to the global tourism stage, particularly through his strategic involvement in bringing the country to ITB Berlin. This move not only showcased Georgia on an international platform but also solidified its status as a vibrant travel destination.

Kiknadze’s business acumen was evident through his roles as the founder, shareholder, and former CEO of regional franchisee partner companies of global brands such as American Express Travel and Carlson Wagonlit Travel. His visionary leadership was also instrumental in the establishment and success of the GHG Georgian Hospitality Group, where he served as CEO.

During his tenure as Chairman of the Georgian Department of Tourism and Resorts (NTO) from 2004 to 2006, Kiknadze played a crucial role in laying the foundational stones for the country’s tourism sector. He was pivotal in creating a conducive environment for hospitality industry clusters, establishing a legal framework for tourism development, and initiating public-private partnership programs. His efforts in building tourism education institutions and designing principles for international tourism promotion have greatly contributed to Georgia’s tourism landscape.

Beyond tourism, Kiknadze was a serial entrepreneur, creating and leading companies across various sectors, including architecture, design, publishing, and advertising. His commitment to innovation extended to the IT, winery, and microbiology technology sectors, where he continued to develop startups, offering mentorship and support to budding entrepreneurs.

Kiknadze’s legacy extends to his role as a co-founder of the Creative Business Cup Georgia and as a founding member of the Georgian Angel Investors Club, further demonstrating his dedication to fostering entrepreneurship in Georgia. His influence was pivotal in making Georgia the official partner country for ITB Berlin in 2023, a testament to his lifelong commitment to enhancing Georgia’s stature in the global tourism industry. Saba Kiknadze’s legacy in Georgian tourism is indeed remarkable, leaving behind a thriving industry that continues to grow and attract visitors from around the world.
