The poverty level in Armenia decreased to 23.7% in 2023 from 24.8% in 2022, according to a report by the Statistical Committee.
Since 2019, this indicator has been calculated using the World Bank's methodology, which defines the minimum standard of living.
In 2023, the urban poverty rate was 21.5%, while rural poverty was 27%. The extreme poverty rate in urban areas dropped to 0.5%, and in rural areas to 2%. The overall extreme poverty rate in the country was 1.1%, down by 0.1% from 2022.
The Gini coefficient, which measures inequality, improved, decreasing from 0.239 to 0.230 in terms of consumption and from 0.352 to 0.348 in terms of income.
Child poverty also decreased, with the percentage of extremely poor children dropping to 1.8% and the percentage of poor children to 31.7%.
