The American Chamber of Commerce in Georgia responds to the recent violence and intimidation directed at peaceful protestors. The Chamber call upon the authorities to immediately stop this violence.
"The American Chamber of Commerce in Georgia unequivocally condemns the violence and intimidation directed at peaceful protestors in recent days. We call upon the authorities to immediately stop this violence, uphold democratic principles, and protect the fundamental rights of its citizens.
Over the past two weeks, following the GD's decision to suspend consideration of EU membership, the people of Georgia have exercised their democratic right to voice their dissatisfaction through peaceful protests. These demonstrations reflect a deeply held aspiration to align with European values and standards.
The government's response, however, has been deeply alarming. The use of excessive force and aggressive tactics has drawn widespread condemnation from Georgian society and the country's Western partners. Reports of over 400 individuals being arrested and 300 injured, including serious cases, highlights the unacceptable nature of these actions. Footage showing the brutal treatment of protestors, including those already subdued or incapacitated, is particularly troubling.
This situation is not only a humanitarian and democratic crisis but also a grave threat to Georgia's economic stability and security. Actions that erode trust in Georgia's commitment to democratic values risk alienating Western allies and jeopardizing critical partnerships. The suspension of the US-Georgia strategic partnership, will have far-reaching negative consequences.
While AmCham's mission is centered on fostering a strong business environment, our primary concern in this moment is for the safety and dignity of all citizens. It is especially distressing to witness Georgia's youth targeted in acts of repression. These young people represent the future of this nation, and their voices must be protected, not silenced.
The ongoing violence and disregard for democratic norms risk isolating Georgia and undermining its progress. To reverse this alarming trajectory, we urge the authorities to stop the violence and intimidation, conduct transparent and thorough investigations into any reported transgressions and hold all individuals and groups accountable.
Georgia's future depends on its ability to uphold the principles of democracy, human rights, and rule of law. AmCham remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting Georgia's path toward a secure, prosperous, and democratic future, and we call on the authorities to act responsibly and decisively in this critical moment", - the statement reads.
