Quality monitoring is actively underway on the 23-kilometer Kvesheti-Kobi road project, according to Georgia’s Roads Department. The inspections cover the quality of construction materials and compliance of completed works with established requirements, including asphalt and concrete, reinforcement steel, road foundation layers, engineering structures, operating parameters and road safety infrastructure.

As part of the latest scheduled monitoring, inspectors checked the concrete used for retaining walls and tunnel walls. They also carried out topographic surveying of the 9-kilometer main tunnel and its parallel emergency tunnel. The results will form the basis for technical conclusions and, if necessary, further measures.

The largest section of the project involves construction of the 9-kilometer main tunnel and an emergency tunnel of the same length. China Railway Tunnel Group Co is carrying out the GEL 902 million contract. Both tunnels have already been excavated, while interior finishing, electromechanical and ventilation systems are currently being installed. Once completed, the main tunnel will be the longest in Georgia.

The project’s second 12.7-kilometer section is being built by China Railway 23rd Bureau Group Co under a GEL 317 million contract covering five bridges, four tunnels and the rehabilitation of one existing bridge. Most of the remaining construction work is concentrated on this section. A total of GEL 79 million was spent on the road project in January-August 2026.
