The large-scale rehabilitation of Shota Rustaveli Avenue is in an active phase. The works, carried out 24/7 by the Infrastructure Development Department of Tbilisi City Hall, cover the road section from the intersection of Tamar Chovelidze Street to Freedom Square.

According to Tbilisi City Hall, all types of underground utility networks are currently being replaced on the avenue—work is underway on the water supply, sewage, and gas supply systems. In parallel, a stormwater drainage system is being installed.

Mayor of Tbilisi Kakha Kaladze, along with Deputy Mayor Andria Basilaia, inspected the ongoing project.

"The renewal of underground communications is in progress; they were in critical condition and posed major problems for the residential houses and road infrastructure along the avenue. First, we aim to have the section from Chovelidze Street to the so-called Elbakidze Rise sorted out by September, applying the base layers of asphalt so that vehicular traffic can resume. Work will actively continue over the next four months and will conclude at the end of November. Rustaveli Avenue will be completely renewed and beautified," stated Kakha Kaladze.

Currently, underground cable ducts are being built on the sidewalks to relocate overhead wires. In the pedestrian area, existing railings, paving slabs, and various infrastructure elements are being dismantled. Additionally, underground pedestrian crossings are being cleared of soil in preparation for waterproofing work.Following the complete rehabilitation of the underground utility networks, efforts will transition to updating the road infrastructure. Specifically, sidewalks will be repaved with natural stone tiles, and new asphalt will be laid on the roadway. Safety islands, zebra crossings, traffic lights, and appropriate road signs will also be installed.

Furthermore, underground waste containers and a new street lighting network will be set up along the avenue, with landscaping work scheduled for the final phase of the rehabilitation.
