Rezo Vashakidze Urges Gov’ t to Prioritize Agriculture and Implement Import Quotas to Boost Local Production

Rezo Vashakidze, founder of the poultry meat processing company Chirina, urges the Georgian government to prioritize certain sectors within agriculture to help boost local production. Speaking in an interview on BMGTV’s "Tertili" show, Vashakidze emphasized the importance of identifying the product categories that Georgia has the potential to produce, with state support programs tailored to these areas. This follows the announcement by Minister of Agriculture David Songhulashvili that agricultural programs will be updated starting from April.

Vashakidze discussed the barriers hindering the growth of local production, focusing on market unpredictability. For example, Chirina currently produces 12,000 tons of poultry products annually but has the capacity to produce up to 30,000 tons. However, he explained that local producers face significant risks due to imports, particularly from China, where poultry products, such as chicken breasts, are in excess and sold at lower prices. This makes it difficult for local producers to compete, as imports flood the market, undermining the viability of local production.

The main issue, according to Vashakidze, is the lack of market stability, with unpredictable import trends disrupting local production planning. He suggested that a system of quotas for imports would help balance local production and ensure a fair market. By limiting excessive imports, local producers could plan better and ensure their products are sold at sustainable prices, benefiting both producers and consumers.

To solve these problems, Vashakidze proposes a coordinated effort between the government and producers to define production capabilities and necessary imports. He believes the government should make political decisions on what products the country should focus on to become self-sufficient in key food items like meat and potatoes. Implementing a quota system could help ensure the long-term stability of the agricultural sector.
