Three road safety organizations have urged the government to reform speed control policies and the driver penalty points system, arguing that the current approach is ineffective in preventing speeding violations.
The Partnership for Road Safety Foundation, Alliance for Safe Roads Georgia, and Georgian Transport and Roads Association said road accidents remain a major public challenge. In 2025, traffic crashes injured 8,191 people and killed 469, with speeding identified as the cause of 114 deaths. They also highlighted pedestrian safety concerns, noting that 164 pedestrians died in road accidents last year.
The organizations said that out of 3.33 million video fines issued in 2025, more than 1.81 million were related to speeding. However, drivers do not currently lose penalty points for video-recorded speeding violations, leaving financial fines as the main punishment. They argue this does not prevent repeat offenses.
The groups are calling for speeding violations captured by cameras to affect penalty points, a rolling points system instead of annual resets, stricter speed tolerance limits, and a reduction of the urban speed limit from 60 km/h to 50 km/h. They say the measures would bring Georgia closer to European road safety practices and improve protection for all road users.
