Giorgi Ramishvili, founder and chairman of the diversified Silk Road Group, views Georgia's energy sector as possessing massive, yet largely unrealised, potential, particularly in the scope of hydropower and related resources. He asserts that the country is uniquely well-equipped to harness its natural resources to make clean, affordable hydropower a significant and eventually dominant proportion of the national energy mix. The Group's own activities in the sector, such as the operation of the Bakhvi plant, serve as a model for developing effective and clean power generation that adheres to national carbon reduction commitments.
Despite this substantial potential, Mr Ramishvili acknowledges that significant progress is still required, emphasising that a major challenge lies in improving the social acceptance of new hydropower projects among the public. He stresses that attracting essential domestic and international private investment for renewable energy development hinges on building this public confidence and clearly demonstrating the societal and financial benefits. This strategic focus on clean energy complements the Group's existing portfolio and aligns with its mission to power Georgia's ability to compete in the global market.
