Some Donors Are Telling NGOs Not To Register In The Transparency Registry - Speaker

შალვა პაპუაშვილი

We have received information that some donors are telling non-governmental organizations that they should not register in the transparency registry, - said the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili.

According to him, donors are consulting non-governmental organizations on how they can evade the law on "Transparency of foreign influence".

"We are informed that some donors are telling non-governmental organizations that they should not register in the transparency register. As you know, this register will be launched soon. We get such information, they tell them that those who register will not receive the grant. Also, consultation is going on how to evade this law and what ways and machinations to find to not register and at the same time get the grant. Among them, there are consultations and advice on how to register abroad, which is completely ridiculous and beyond all seriousness. The NGOs said that it was unacceptable for them to be perceived as carriers of the interests of a foreign power. If they register abroad, they will directly become a foreign power. What they called unacceptable for themselves, that they were representatives of a foreign power, it turns out to be acceptable now. Therefore, on the one hand, it is hypocrisy that we have in the non-governmental sector, and on the other hand, it is a problem of transparency, which the Georgian people have already seen. Therefore, everyone is expecting that appropriate publicity will be provided," Papuashvili said.
