Songulashvili: Stronger Phytosanitary System Possible Through State and International Cooperation

დავით სონღულაშვილი

Georgia’s Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Davit Songulashvili, said that cooperation between the state and international partners will help build a stronger and more effective phytosanitary system in the country. He made the remarks at a scientific conference titled “Climate Conditions – Challenges in Plant Protection.”

The minister highlighted that climate change is increasing the spread of plant pests and diseases, raising the importance of modern and efficient phytosanitary systems. He stressed the need to ensure safe agricultural production, protect consumers, and strengthen the credibility of Georgian agri-food exports in international markets.

Experts at the conference discussed key issues including timely plant protection measures, effective pesticide use, and risk management under changing climate conditions. Participants also outlined a set of actions aimed at strengthening plant protection systems and supporting sustainable agricultural development.

Georgia has been a member of the International Plant Protection Convention since 2007 and joined the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization in 2016. The country is also aligning its phytosanitary legislation with EU standards under the Association Agreement, with around 80 regulatory acts currently being harmonized.
