The Russian State Duma (lower chamber of parliament) has postponed indefinitely the recognition of Armenian citizens' national driving licenses for work and entrepreneurial activity in Russia, Russian Business Consulting (RBC) news outlet reported.
The Chairman of the Duma's Transportation Committee Yevgeny Moskvichev, who proposed the suspension, said that it "does not correspond to Russia's interests at present."
State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin noted that Armenia would receive additional preferences, if its authorities have taken any steps to consolidate the status of the Russian language (in Armeni).
Muscow cites this criterion to determines whether to allow the use of national driver's licenses of other countries on the territory of Russia, he explained. Such an opportunity is available to citizens of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, where the status of the Russian language is constitutionally enshrined, ARKA reports.
