Georgia’s sunflower oil imports have become significantly more expensive this year. Official data shows that although import volumes decreased, total spending surged sharply.
In the first 11 months of 2025, Georgia imported 40,147 tons of sunflower oil worth $60.4 million. Compared to the same period last year, the value of imports increased by 35.6%, while the volume dropped by 3.5%.
Russia remains Georgia’s dominant supplier. The country purchased 33,155 tons of oil worth $50.2 million from Russia, down from 36,315 tons last year. Georgia also imports sunflower oil from Ukraine, Azerbaijan, the UAE and Hungary, though Russian products still account for the overwhelming majority.
Additional pressure is expected in 2026, as Russia plans to raise export duties on sunflower oil by 36.5% starting January. According to Russian media, this will make imports even more expensive for Georgia, likely driving prices higher next year.
