From August 3, travel time for passenger trains between Tbilisi and Batumi will be reduced from five to four hours. As part of the speed increase project on the Guria railway section, Georgian Railway has announced an emergency procurement worth GEL 107,380 to install video surveillance systems at 25 railway crossings.
The project includes the installation, configuration, and launch of surveillance equipment. A total of 50 cameras will be placed at the crossings, with live footage transmitted to train drivers via tablets to improve safety and allow faster responses to potential risks.
Georgian Railway said the procurement was necessary due to the need for additional safety measures as train speeds increase. A larger video monitoring project was delayed due to technical issues, prompting the company to implement a temporary local system through a simplified procurement process.
The Tbilisi-Batumi speed improvement project includes infrastructure upgrades on several railway sections, including the Khashuri-Surami-Kharagauli-Zestaponi route and the Guria region. The railway also plans additional safety measures, including fencing along the tracks to prevent access by pedestrians and livestock.
