The Georgian government has increased the budget for the Tbilisi Metro Modernization Project by GEL 5 million, bringing the total funding to GEL 35 million for 2025, according to a decree issued on October 13.
In July 2025, the international tender for the project was won by GT Group, which would deliver 111 new metro carriages to Tbilisi City Hall for a total cost of EUR 150 million. The carriages will be produced by the Chinese manufacturer CRRC.
The decree also confirms that the company has already received the advance payment required to begin the project and has provided a EUR 17.6 million bank guarantee as assurance for the payment.
Delivery of the new metro carriages is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026, with financing provided by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
