The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has proposed extending the mandate of the EU’s civilian monitoring mission in Armenia by two years.

According to the press office of the High Representative, as reported by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, EU member states have already expressed their support for this initiative.

Discussions are currently underway within the relevant structures of the Council of the European Union regarding the necessary legal acts to extend the mission. The Council’s final decision on the matter is expected in the coming days.

The office of the High Representative emphasized that the EU mission in Armenia has clearly defined objectives: monitoring the situation along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border from the Armenian side and supporting the EU’s efforts to facilitate relations between the two countries.

The agency highlighted the mission’s effectiveness, noting a significant reduction in armed incidents in border areas since the deployment of observers. Furthermore, the European Union regularly informs Azerbaijan about the mission's activities.
