Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Armenia’s potential accession to the European Union is the sovereign right of the country but emphasized that simultaneous membership in the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is not feasible. His remarks followed the Armenian government's approval of a draft law initiating the process of joining the EU.

According to Interfax, Peskov also noted the need to clarify the EU’s stance on this matter, stressing that the initiative for membership stems from the EU. “We are well aware of the example of the Republic of Turkey, which has maintained its orientation toward EU membership for decades without receiving much reciprocity from Brussels,” the Kremlin representative said.

Peskov highlighted the importance of relying on existing integration frameworks, pointing out that Armenia’s membership in the EAEU brings "significant positive dividends," reflected in higher economic growth rates.

Earlier that day, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan commented on the government-approved draft law, stating that the final decision on the country’s EU accession could only be made through a nationwide referendum.
