Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said the clean-up of the area around Station Square metro station and the so-called Dezerter Bazaar was necessary due to the serious inconvenience caused by illegal street trading and blocked pedestrian areas.
According to Kaladze, despite multiple warnings from the Municipal Inspection, street vendors did not remove the unauthorized structures themselves, forcing the city to carry out a special operation.
“This city belongs to everyone. It is important that citizens have the opportunity to move freely, which had become a major problem in these areas. It created significant discomfort, especially for local residents, and movement was becoming impossible,” Kaladze said.
The Tbilisi Municipal Inspection, together with Tbilservice Group, removed illegal structures and stalls from the Station Square area, as well as Tevdore Mghvdeli, Abastumani and Tsinamdzghvrishvili streets. The mayor added that vendors have the opportunity to continue their activities at designated market areas nearby.
