GD Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze honored the memory of those who died in the August 2008 War, noting that more than 400 people, including Georgian soldiers, lost their lives defending the country.

Speaking to journalists in Mukhatgverdi, Kobakhidze stressed that Russia illegally occupies 20% of Georgia’s territory and that nothing justifies its actions.

“August 8 is a tragic date, a reminder of the most serious adventure and betrayal committed by the then government. This day underlines the need for Georgia to be governed by a sovereign government that acts in the country’s national interests and not under the dictates of external forces. We will defend our country’s independence to the end, to prevent such crimes from repeating and to preserve peace and our national interests,” Kobakhidze said.
