Tbilisi City Hall has invested 1.5 billion GEL in preschool education in recent years, Deputy Mayor Andria Basilaia announced during a presentation on the city’s social and healthcare policy.
The Tbilisi Kindergarten Management Agency currently operates 190 public kindergartens, serving 60,000 children. According to Basilaia, modernizing kindergarten infrastructure has been a key priority.
“In recent years, we’ve built and opened 26 new kindergartens across the city, fully rehabilitated 14 more, and carried out complete repairs in 8. Construction is underway on 6 new kindergartens, along with the full reconstruction of 2 outdated buildings,” he stated.
Beyond infrastructure, the city has improved service quality by:
- Introducing HACCP food safety and nutrition standards
- Installing modern fire protection and video surveillance systems
- Ensuring disability access, including elevators in all new buildings
- Standardizing furniture placement and educational materials quality
- The city also expanded its summer kindergarten program from 40 to 55 locations, now serving 20,000 children.
Additionally, more than 1,000 Ukrainian children displaced by the war have received preschool education and psycho-social support in three specialized kindergartens.
“These steps are part of a broader strategy to bring every kindergarten in Tbilisi up to modern standards,” Basilaia emphasized.
