The Russian Federal Customs Administration has assigned a special lane for Armenian trucks going through the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border.

"According to the agreement reached as a result of working discussions between Armenia and Russia, on June 20, 2022 the Russian government decided to assign a separate territory at a distance of 3-4 km from the international road checkpoint Upper Lars, where about 250 trucks will be able to go through customs control a day,' Armenia's State Revenue Committee and the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure said in a joint statement today.

They said this decision is expected to increase the capacity of the checkpoint, eliminate congestions and help effectively manage the lines.

The only overland route connecting Armenia and Russia passes through the Upper Lars checkpoint. In summer when the number of trucks transporting fruits, vegetables, and other perishable goods to Russia increases dramatically, huge lines are formed atn the border checkpoint.

It is expected that after the reconstruction, which began in March 2021, the capacity of the check point will increase by 6.4 times to handle more than 2.5 thousand vehicles a day from the current 800-1000 trucks, ARKA reports.
