Armenia Reduces Russian Gas Imports by 13% While Increasing Supplies from Iran

In the first half of 2024, Armenia significantly adjusted its gas import structure, reducing natural gas purchases from Russia while boosting supplies from Iran. Overall, natural gas imports decreased by 8.5%, totaling 1.35 million cubic meters.

According to Armenia’s Customs Service data cited by Finport, imports of Russian natural gas, which account for 83.3% of total gas imports, declined by 13% to 1.13 million cubic meters. In monetary terms, Russian gas imports dropped by 12.6%, amounting to $196.2 million.

Meanwhile, Iranian gas imports showed substantial growth, increasing by 22.9% to 226,200 cubic meters. The customs value of Iranian gas rose by 23.3%, reaching $37.8 million.

The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market, on the other hand, experienced a notable surge in imports, growing by 63.2% to 98,500 tons. Russia continued to dominate this market, accounting for 98.2% of LPG imports. Russian LPG supplies increased by 71.2% to 96,800 tons, with their value climbing by 71.5% to $28.9 million.

In contrast, LPG imports from Iran declined by 21.4% to 1,600 tons, and shipments from Iraq plummeted by 92.5% to 129.6 tons. Small volumes of LPG were also imported from Georgia, the UAE, Turkey, China, and Germany.
