Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Georgia Gela Bezhuashvili states that authoritarian oligarchic rule cannot be established in Georgia and the Georgian people must defend the Constitution and their votes in the 2024 parliamentary elections. This is how the former high-ranking official echoes recent developments in an extensive post on his personal Facebook page.
"Georgia's historical place is Europe.
This is the unwavering will of our citizens, which is also protected by the Constitution. The country's strategic goal is to join the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Together, we will definitely achieve this goal! Georgia is a candidate country for EU membership, and this is our common achievement. Not long ago, we celebrated this historic achievement together and put aside our differences.
Today, the Georgian government is changing the European and Euro-Atlantic vector, contradicting the choice of the majority of our citizens, violating the Constitution of Georgia, confronting the country's strategic partners and ignoring the security and diplomatic environment created over the years, which allowed our future generations to live in a protected, developed, democratic and truly free country. Authoritarian, oligarchic rule will not be established in Georgia, which I assess as an attempt to introduce the policies and actions announced by the ruling team and its leader. Georgia will not accept the Russian model of “sovereign democracy” and will firmly continue to introduce and develop the model of European democracy.
Thank you to everyone who defends Georgian, European values today. Thank you to our children for thier courage, strength, steadfastness, free spirit and thinking.
Let us defend the Constitution of Georgia together, let us defend our vote, which the government treacherously stole in the October 2024 parliamentary elections, let us defend our nation’s strategic choice to become a full member of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance.
Georgia will definitely shine!", writes Gela Bezhuashvili.
