GD Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that Georgia’s existing agreement with Azerbaijan for the supply of additional gas (0.5 billion cubic meters per year) will expire at the end of 2026, and the government plans to negotiate updated terms.
“This agreement is valid until the end of next year. Naturally, we will conduct negotiations with Azerbaijan in a constructive and friendly manner. It would be premature to discuss the results now, but we hope to reach an appropriate deal,” Kobakhidze said in response to a question about the Southern Gas Corridor.
Under current arrangements, Georgia receives Azerbaijan gas both under an “optional” contract, which allows the country to buy up to 5% of the gas transported from Azerbaijan to Turkey at a preferential price, and through a fixed additional supply contract, which guarantees 500 million cubic meters per year, regardless of the total pipeline volume.
Georgia consumes roughly 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. In 2024, the country received 2.3 billion cubic meters from Azerbaijan, while gas imports from Russia increased to 788 million cubic meters.
